QUESTIONS PEOPLE ASK BEFORE JOINING A MARTIAL ARTS ACADEMY

What should I expect in my first martial arts class?

Most classes start with warm-ups such as mobility drills, light cardio, warm ups, and practicing a few basic techniques before pad or bag rounds. Many schools finish with focused drilling sessions and then sparring and with a short cool down to finish the class. The emphasis is on fundamentals and safety so you leave confident and not overwhelmed.

Do I need to be in shape before I start?

Not really. Martial arts will get you in shape. Good martial arts classes scale intensity and offer modifications while your fitness, coordination, mobility and skills improve. Expect the first classes to be challenging, then, as time passes, your conditioning will build and the martial arts training will become easier.

How often should a beginner train Martial Arts?

It’s usually a good idea to begin with two to three sessions of martial arts classes per week. This helps you build skill and recover from any initial fatigue. Your fitness and skills will gradually improve and then you can think about training three to five day a week.  The trick is to listen to your body to maintain a consistency over months rather than short quick bursts of training sessions.

What type of martial arts gear do I need?

Most martial arts classes and gyms will have basic and equipment on hand for its students. However, you will quickly want your own hand wraps and gloves for comfortable fit and good hygiene. As you become more experienced, you may want shin guards and mouth guards. Your coaches and teachers will also likely advise you to get specialty gear such as a Gi or headgear as you progress.

Is taking martial arts classes safe?

When instruction is qualified and progression is gradual and the training is structured and controlled, it can be safe. Using proper protective equipment, focusing on correct technique, and learning under good supervision will reduce the injury risk significantly. Many martial arts gyms start with non-contact or controlled contact drills before progressing onto any type of sparring.

What benefits will I get beyond fitness?

Beyond the leap forward in fitness, studies often show lower stress, sharper focus, and increased confidence when someone trains in martial arts. Martial Arts training also builds mental resilience, discipline, and a sense of community. Practitioners of the martial arts have reported improved mood and general happiness from regular, purposeful practice.
